Best Slime Ever

In our Art with a Splash of Science classes, we take our chemistry very seriously. Our students have tried many recipes over the years with a variety of adjustments. Some have been too sticky, others have clumped together.

We have finally landed on the perfect blend that brings stretchy (but not sticky) satisfaction every time. Enjoy our Best Slime Ever recipe:

Helpful Hint:
The kneading is very important. If your slime is still too sticky, continue to knead it until you reach the desired consistency.

Level: Beginning to Intermediate

Time: 15 minutes

Materials:

  • 1/2 cup Water

  • 1/3 cup School Glue (such as Elmer's)

  • 1/2 teaspoon Baking Soda

  • 1 Tablespoon Saline Solution (potentially more, see directions)

  • Food Coloring (optional)

  • Glitter (optional)

Directions:

  1. Stir water and glue starch together until they are well mixed.

  2. Mix in the baking soda thoroughly.

  3. Add in Saline Solution and stir to desired consistency. If your slime is still sticky, add additional saline solution in tiny amounts. Stir between each addition. If you add too much, the slime will bind up and lose elasticitiy.

  4.  Add food coloring and/or glitter if desired.

  5. Once all ingredients are together, take them out of the bowl and knead them for approximately five minutes.

The end results will be smooth and stretchy!

Problem solving:

  • Too sticky - knead it more

  • Still too sticky - add small amounts of saline solution

  • Not stretchy (and not sticky) - knead in a little more glue (about a teaspoon at a time)
